NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A man has been arrested and charged, after allegedly holding his girlfriend's toddler-age son hostage as he threatened suicide in Newark, N.J.

Shortly before noon Tuesday, police in Newark responded to a report of a person barricaded at 380 Avon Ave. They learned Rashawn West, 19, was armed with a knife, and was threatening suicide from behind a locked apartment door where he was holed up with his girlfriend's 3-year-old son.

Police later found out that West had fled with the child. Following a search, police found the child unharmed at 2:30 p.m. and arrested West without incident at 202 South St.

The child was taken to Beth Israel Hospital as a precautionary measure, while West was held for evaluation at the crisis ward at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Newark police said.

West was charged with false imprisonment under domestic violence laws.
