MYSTIC, Conn. (CBSNewYork) - This month, we've been touring easy-to-get-to destinations in Connecticut as part of our One Tank Trips series.

Today, our Connecticut Bureau Chief, Fran Schneidau, takes us to on coastal town where a quick getaway is nearby.

Mystic is a fine choice for a family trip - a coastal village with a lot of attractions, enough to hold the kids for the whole weekend.

One Tank Trips: Visit The Aquarium In Mystic, Conn.

The main draw there is Mystic Aquarium, which features adventures, explorations, and exhibits that amaze, according to Dr. Steve Coan, who heads up the aquarium.

"There's no place else in the northeast where you can get in the water with a beluga whale. In fact, there's nowhere else in the northeast you can see a beluga whale," he told Schneidau.

The exclusive Titanic exhibit continues to be a huge draw, along with a new feature - the ice patrol.

"The ice patrol rescues people in very difficult situations, and of course, patrols the Arctic and other regions to make sure that what happened to the Titanic doesn't happen again," he said.

Because of its fantastic exhibits, Mystic is one of the top ten aquariums in the country, and summer is a great time to visit, since many of the creatures, such as the beautiful African penguins and the tropical free-flying birds like the hot weather. So summer visitors are treated to a real eye-full.

The aquarium is located at 55 Coogan Boulevard, Mystic, CT 06355. It's open daily, except Thanksgiving and Christmas. April to October hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Official Website
