Reports: Victor Cruz Contract Getting Closer, But Not Imminent

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Though an agreement isn't imminent, Victor Cruz is inching closer toward a long-term deal with the Giants, according to multiple reports.

The wide receiver first voiced his desire for a big payday after the Giants' victory in Super Bowl XLVI. Cruz set a franchise record with 1,536 yards that season and followed it up with 1,092 yards in 2012.

A source told the New York Post that negotiations "are on the 2-yard line" and now the sides just "need to give a little bit."

"In a perfect world, I want to finish my career here," Cruz told the Post from a charity event Tuesday. "I'm from here, born and raised in New Jersey. I wouldn't want to play anywhere else. But I understand it's a business and all of that. In a perfect world, this is where I'd like to be."

Cruz was assigned a first-round tender by New York this offseason but received no bites as a restricted free agent.

The Paterson native "apparently lowered his demands" from the $10-million-neighborhood to around $8 million annually, according to the New York Daily News.

Giants co-owner John Mara has repeatedly said he believes a deal will get done at some point.

"I just want to get through one day without somebody asking me about the Victor Cruz negotiation," Mara told WFAN radio's Mike Francesa last week.

The Giants have voluntary organized team activity practices scheduled to begin next week. The team will assemble for its mandatory mini camp on June 11.
