A new study published in the American Journal of Medicine did not offer a concrete explanation for the new information, and experts are surprised as marijuana smokers are often known to have higher caloric intakes than non-smokers, CBS 2’s Alice Gainer reported Thursday.
“We’d have to assume that there’s some compound that is involved with this marijuana smoke that causes an improvement in metabolism,” explained Dr. Stuart Weiss, a professor and endocrinologist at the NYU School Of Medicine.
“All the people who I know that do smoke it are pretty slim, actually,” local resident Arlene Meyer said.
The breakthrough research could also improve blood-sugar control, according to data. The study revealed that marijuana smokers have a 16-percent lower fasting insulin level.

“Nothing positive about drugs, period,” said Brenda Peters, a drug counselor and social worker.
Peters told CBS 2 that she has seen firsthand that the bad outweighs the good when it comes to marijuana.
Weiss explained that many of the negative side effects of marijuana smoking could be circumvented by isolating certain parts of the drug and putting them in a less toxic pill.
Data for the study came from nearly 5,000 patients over a five-year span.
