LI Twins Enlist In Air Force This Memorial Day Weekend

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - This weekend, as we salute those who gave their lives for the country, the next generation of the nation's military is stepping up with big shoes to fill.

Identical twins Lias and Daniel Gomez from Oceanside, N.Y. said joining the Air Force just made sense.

"Well basically, my dad was a cop and my mom's a flight attendant. So mix those two together - there you go, you know Air Force was born," Lias told WCBS 880's Jim Smith. "I just always had that feeling of service. I don't like desk jobs, so the Air Force was definitely appealing to me and something that was honorable."

Daniel said now that they've taken their oath of enlistment, it's time to shape up and ship out.

"Being that it's Memorial Day, it feels a little different because when you take your oath of enlistment, they say that you lose your title as civilian. So it was a very weird perspective to be in," Daniel told Smith. "Next step is boot camp. We set our date for after August 9th. So after that, then we go to boot camp and then that's two month's training and then comes tech school."

The twins said they wanted to pursue a path of service and honor and now have just a few months left before donning the uniform.

"Last summer that I don't have to salute anyone. That's definitely something to enjoy," the brothers told Smith.
