Dogs Removed From Mich. Breeding Facility Getting Care In NJ, Elsewhere

MADISON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- More than 150 dogs removed from locations owned by a breeding facility in Michigan are getting care at shelters around the Midwest and in New Jersey.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said the mostly Jack Russell terriers and Shiba Inus were transferred to the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center at St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in Madison, N.J.

"These dogs have been living in miserable conditions their entire lives," said Kathryn Destreza, ASPCA director of investigations for the ASPCA Field Investigations & Response team. "We are excited to see them move on to shelters so quickly and soon, to loving homes."

The case involves JRT John's Jack Russell and Shiba Inu Kennel near Lake City, about 170 miles northwest of Detroit. Officials said the animals were living in outdoor enclosures with little protection.

Many dogs had no access to clean drinking water and responders said the dogs were unsocialized and fearful when handled by humans, the ASPCA said.

The dogs were removed May 23 from the facilities.

The rehab center in Madison helps dogs rescued from puppy mills and hoarding cases overcome their fear and anxiety.

"We'll be introducing them to all of the things that they will experience as pets -- very slowly, very gently and systematically so they learn that all the things they think are scary are not at all scary," Kristen Collins, director of the Behavioral Rehabilitation Center, told 1010 WINS.

The man who started the breeding business has said the seizure was illegal.
