City Turns To eBay In Effort To Sell Morgue Refrigerator

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The city Office of General Services has gone on eBay, hoping someone will buy a steel morgue refrigerator that has been taken out of use at the Manhattan Psychiatric Center.

Bidding on Saturday morning was up to $355 for the four-drawer unit, but that price does not include delivery. Buyers have to be willing to remove the fridge themselves from the facility at 600 E. 125th St. on Wards Island.

By 10:00 p.m., the refrigeration unit had 34 bids, and the price was up to $685.

Office of General Services spokeswoman Heather Groll told the New York Post that the ad is no hoax.

She said the agency does get unusual surplus items to sell from time to time, including barber chairs from prisons and police cars, but she doesn't recall a previous sale of a morgue cooler.

The auction runs through June 6.
