Sanitation Worker Almost Loses Leg In Early Morning Accident

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Police are investigating an accident that almost cost a sanitation worker his left leg on Saturday.

A 26-year-old man was operating a Budget rental truck when it apparently slammed into a sanitation worker who was loading trash into the back of a garbage truck on East 4th Street, near Cortelyou Road in Brooklyn.

The victim was pinned between the two vehicles and suffered a broken right leg and arm, his left leg was crushed above knee and nearly required amputation. The 27-year-old man was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was stabilized.

Authorities believe the driver of the truck may have fallen asleep at the wheel, he was not intoxicated. The incident remains under investigation.
