Craig Carton Rejoices Over Tebow Signing: 'The Patriots Just Got Worse!'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It's the nightmare scenario: Tim Tebow signing with New England, a new cog in Bill Belichick's Patriots machine bent on sticking it to the rival Jets.
And indeed that's the narrative with Tebow joining the Patriots at minicamp on Tuesday. But WFAN co-host Craig Carton has a different take on the whole thing.
"Today is a great day if you're a New York Jet fan," he said to open the "Boomer & Carton" show Tuesday morning. "And I don't understand why all you knuckleheads over the last 12 hours are going bonkers and negatively talking about this. The Patriots just got worse!"
Boomer & Carton On Tebow
Jets coach Rex Ryan's grand Tebow experiment fell flat on its face last season. The backup quarterback didn't do much with limited touches, his playing time coming primarily as a personal punt protector on special teams. He was passed over in favor of third-stringer Greg McElroy when Ryan decided to bench starting quarterback Mark Sanchez -- twice -- late in the season.
So now Belichick is going to embarrass the Jets (again, admittedly) by picking Tebow off the scrap heap?
Carton just doesn't see it happening.
"With what?" he said. "A flat-footed, slow nothing!"
Carton's co-host, former Jets quarterback Boomer Esiason, famously implored the Jets to cut the quarterback on August 6 -- nearly nine months before the team pulled the plug on Tebow Time.
Esiason wasn't a fan of New York's 2012 trade for Denver's playoff-winning quarterback, but said the New England signing "makes complete sense."
"It doesn't cost them anything," Esiason said Tuesday. "They're not trading for him, they're not giving up draft picks, there's not gonna be a press conference, he's gonna be the third-string quarterback up there; maybe Belichick uses him in some way, shape or form."
Esiason sees Foxborough as a good landing spot for Tebow, who many thought was done in the NFL -- as long as Tom Brady's playing time isn't affected.
"The rest of the NFL is basically saying, 'If Belichick is stupid enough to take Tom Brady off the field and put Tim Tebow on the field, then he needs to have his head examined,' " Esiason said.
