When It's Time To Shop For Dad, Watches Make A Great Gift

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- They are a clear sign that Father's Day is almost here -- ads for watches have been popping up everywhere.  For some men, a watch isn't just a time piece, it's an accessory.

Sarah Legge said she picked out a watch as a gift for her husband, Martin, and she knew exactly what she was looking for.

"The nickel allergy was the real reason I had a specific thing in mind," Legge told CBS 2's Tracee Carrasco.

For shoppers who may have a bit more trouble finding the perfect watch for dad, Tourneau store director Michael Gordon had some advice.

"What does dad like to do? What does he do for a living? What does he do after work?" he said.

Knowing what dad's favorite activities are and what his personal style is, can make the buying experience much easier, Gordon added.

"Gold, platinum, stainless steel. If they're allergic to any of those metals, you have to determine if they prefer a strap or a bracelet, if they like complications or a stop watch," he said.

Shoppers can find watches priced for most budgets at a store like Tourneau, where a Casio G-Shock goes for $130 and a Glassuta Original can be bought for $113,000.

Gordon suggests buying from authorized dealers who have return policies.
