Manhattan Funeral Expected For James Gandolfini

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Funeral services for Sopranos star James Gandolfini are expected to be held in Manhattan later this week.

The services for Gandolfini, 51, are expected to be held at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in Upper Manhattan.

The Sopranos star died Wednesday while on vacation in Italy. Dr. Claudio Modini, head of the emergency room at the Policlinic Umberto I hospital, said Gandolfini arrived at the hospital at 10:40 p.m. and was pronounced dead at 11 p.m. after resuscitation efforts in the ambulance and hospital failed.

Tributes to Gandolfini popped up all over his home state of New Jersey in the days following his death.

The owner of Holsten's placed a "Reserved" sign on the table where Tony Soprano sat with his family during the much-debated and unforgettable finale. Flowers and Thursday's copy of the Newark Star-Ledger were also placed on the table.

"He was a great guy when he was here filming and I felt just for the type of person he was, we would close the booth off in memory of him," owner Chris Carley said.

Memories of the fallen star spread beyond the Garden State as Hollywood remembered the popular and talented actor.

"He was a genius," David Chase, creator of "The Sopranos," said in a statement. "Anyone who saw him even in the smallest of his performances knows that. He is one of the greatest actors of this or any time."

Gandolfini and his wife, Deborah, who were married in 2008, have a daughter, Liliana, born last year, HBO said. The actor and his former wife, Marcy, have a teenage son, Michael.
