Report: Devils And Patrik Elias Closing In On Deal

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Patrik Elias and the New Jersey Devils are nearing an extension, according to Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger.

Elias, 37, has spent his entire career with the Devils and is the franchise's all-time leading scorer. He totaled 36 points in 48 games last season.

The Devils selected Elias 51st overall in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft and he is their longest-tenured skater.

Should he hit the free agent market, Elias would be one of the most sought-after forwards in a thin free agent class.

General manager Lou Lamoriello is hoping to retain both alternate captain Elias and key winger David Clarkson. It's no secret that teams are lining up sign Clarkson should he become an unrestricted free agent.

One player who is definitely remaining with the Devils is forward Dainius Zubrus. The 35-year-old agreed a three-year, $9.3 million contract, according to multiple reports.
