Reports: Spitzer Planning Run For City Comptroller

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer is has decided to seek the nomination for city comptroller, according to multiple published reports.

Spitzer, who resigned in 2008 while in the middle of a prostitution scandal, spoke with the New York Times about his plans.

He told the newspaper in a Sunday night interview that he hopes "there will be forgiveness, and I am asking for it." The New York Post also reported that Spitzer plans to run for comptroller, citing sources who said the multi-millionaire will fund his campaign himself if necessary.

He will be up against Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer if he does indeed run.

Spitzer served as New York Attorney General for two terms before being elected governor in 2006. He resigned in March 2008, after a scandal erupted when news broke that he had been a client at the Emperors Club VIP escort agency.

If Spitzer runs for city comptroller, he will be the second New York politician who resigned in disgrace to seek redemption this year.

Former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, who left office in 2011 amid a sexting scandal, is now at the front of a pack of mayoral candidates after admitting to "making mistakes and letting many people down."
