Penn Station Restroom Conditions Spark Repeated Complaints

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Some filthy restrooms in the NJ TRANSIT concourse at Penn Station have yet to be scratched off the "to-do" list for upgrades.

As WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported, at the NJ TRANSIT board meeting in June, commuter advocate Al Papp said he rides the train into Penn Station on a regular basis and has noticed problems in the men's room.

"At least in the men's room, the one that I've got some familiarity with has been getting rather deplorable," he said.

He reported mirrors behind the sinks broken and held together with duct tape, two of four sinks not working, and soap dispensers also out of order.

"The doors to stalls many times do not close," he said.

NJ TRANSIT executive director Jim Weinstein said the agency has been embarrassed that Papp had to come back after the Thursday meeting with the very same complaint. He said the agency has been looking into why the problems were not fixed the first time.

But NJ TRANSIT spokeswoman Nancy Snyder said the agency is on the case now, and was already planning to renovate the restrooms in the next few months.
