Witnesses: Bedbugs Seen Jumping Off Man In Manhattan Criminal Court

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- They check you for guns and drugs when you walk into the courthouse in lower Manhattan, but apparently not for bedbugs.

As WCBS 880's Alex Silverman reported, there was a commotion in the halls of Manhattan Criminal Court on Centre Street on Tuesday.

"Members of the audience thought they saw bugs jumping from the defendant," state court spokesman David Bookstaver told Silverman. "Folks thought they saw bedbugs."

The man was in court to answer a summons.

He evidently ran off with the crowd and took his six-legged friends with him, Silverman reported.

"A thorough search was done of the area where the defendant had been and no bedbugs were, in fact, discovered," Bookstaver said.

The court officers called in an exterminator anyway and the room was sprayed.
