Mothers Seek To Set Record For Breastfeeding At Inwood Hill Park

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Dozens of mothers gathered in Inwood Hill Park in Upper Manhattan Saturday morning, in an effort to break the world record for the largest number of women breastfeeding at the same time.

"The Big Latch On" was set to take place simultaneously hundreds of locations worldwide, according to published reports. The even went on in New York despite light rain Saturday morning.

In addition to setting the world record, the event seeks to break down the stigmas associated with breastfeeding in public and teach women about breastfeeding, an organizer told 1010 WINS.

"This is to raise the awareness about that a lot of women want to breastfeed. They just don't know how," said Anina Young, owner of Brazen Lingerie, which hosted the event. "And so, if one has a baby, and they don't have females in their life that breastfed that they saw it, they really don't know how to do it."

Under New York State Law, breastfeeding is permitted and protected in any public or private location. The state has also created a Breastfeeding Mothers Bill of Rights that is placed in all maternal health care facilities, and allows a child under the age of 1 year to accompany his or her mother to a correctional facility if she is breastfeeding at the time she is incarcerated.

This is the third year for the event in New York and the second straight year in Inwood Hill Park, according to published reports.
