Parody Flyers Purportedly Seek Weiner Campaign Interns
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Some flyers purportedly seeking interns for Anthony Weiner's mayoral campaign allegedly have been appearing around Manhattan lately, but they're not really connected to the campaign at all.
The flyers read, "Interns Wanted for the Anthony Weiner Mayoral Campaign," and feature a picture of Weiner speaking in front of his campaign logo and a photo of five young adults representing college interns.
The flyer says in boldface letters that "slutbags," "snitches" and "cops" need not apply. It also says "no cameras," in the same font, but those words are struck out in pen and replaced with a hand-written advisory that there will be "some cameras."
"For more information, report to the loading area behind the docks at sundown and make sure you are not followed," the flyer says.
It advises anyone interested to "pull one of our Weiners," and grab a tab at the bottom marked "Weiner" with no other text.
The Web site "Funny or Die" posted four photos showing the flyers taped to lamp posts along Houston Street – one near Broadway, the other near the Bowery – and walls at unclear locations.
But the New York Daily News reported even though "Funny or Die" claimed the flyers were "spotted around Manhattan," the Web site's staff likely made them up all by themselves.
The flyers came in response to a column in the Daily News this week by Olivia Nuzzi, who spent a month as an intern for the Weiner campaign.
In the Tuesday cover story, Nuzzi wrote that Weiner often called interns "Monica,'' a reference to former White House intern Monica Lewinsky, and that many people worked on the campaign only to get close to Weiner's wife, Huma Abedin. Abedin is an ex-aide to former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Nuzzi also said many of the campaign staff had "short resumes,'' including Morgan, noting that the communications director "last worked as the press secretary for the New Jersey state education commissioner.''
In response, Talking Points Memo quoted Weiner spokeswoman Barbara Morgan using several vulgar terms to describe Nuzzi, including calling her a "slutbag."
ast week, Weiner acknowledged exchanging sexually explicit messages online after similar behavior spurred his resignation from Congress in 2011.
He released a new campaign video Tuesday evening saying he won't quit the race, despite pressure from politicians and newspaper editors.
"Sometimes people say to me, 'You know, this campaign is pretty rough. You may want to quit.' I know that there are newspaper editors and other politicians that say, 'Boy, I wish that guy Weiner would quit,'" he said in the clip. "They don't know New York. They certainly don't know me. 'Quit' isn't the way we roll in New York City. We fight through tough things. We're a tough city."
A new poll released this past Monday found Weiner's support fell from 26 percent last week to 16 percent.
