Attempt For Underwear Record In Times Square Falls Short

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A crowd gathered in Times Square this week in an attempt to set a record for the number of people in their underwear, but the attempt fell far short.

Online underwear retailer FreshPair.com made an attempt Monday to set a world record for the largest gathering of people wearing only underwear. Monday was also National Underwear Day.

But a Huffington Post report said only 779 people showed up, not even close to the record of 2,270 in Salt Lake City in 2011.

FreshPair.com made light of the failure to beat the world record by tweeting a humorous graphic Tuesday.

Accompanied by photos – some of them strategically censored – the company joked that the record fell short because "Naked Cowboy has a monopoly on Times Square," "Naked Cowgirl broke her G-string," and finally, "Weiner came" – showing a man wearing only boxer shorts, a tie and an Anthony Weiner mask as he held two handwritten signs at the event.
