Luxury Cars Stolen In Seconds From Under Valets' Noses In Scarsdale
SCARSDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Three expensive cars were recently stolen from outside a gym in Westchester County, and it all happened in seconds.
As CBS 2's Jessica Schneider reported, the luxury cars were snatched in broad daylight this past Friday, right in front of the valet drivers at a BodyFit workout studio in Scarsdale.
"I've lived here for 40-some-odd years and I've never seen anything like this happen before," said Scarsdale resident John Nemeth. "It's almost a first. This is unbelievable."
Surveillance video from the gas station next door caught the crooks in action.
It showed a getaway car pulling up and three men getting out. One of them walked to a black Porsche, jumped in the driver's seat, and took off.
Afterward, two Mercedes Benzes were snatched, and zipped down Scarsdale Avenue.
"It's unbelievable," said Aida Solomon of Eastchester. "It's pretty surprising because this is pretty safe. It's a safe neighborhood. We keep our cars over here and nothing like that has ever happened."
Classes at BodyFit run between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Since the parking lot is so small, people pull up, throw their cars in park, leave their keys in the ignition, and hop out – leaving the car running for the valet.
"Sometimes they leave the keys in the car," said Stacie Waldman of Scarsdale. "As a gym member, I'll wave to the guy and walk away from my car, which I don't think I'll be doing anymore."
Waldman goes to a gym nearby with a similar valet system. But she said the businesses should have more safeguards in place.
"I think it's kind of irresponsible," Waldman said. "I think this could happen anywhere, not just Scarsdale."
BodyFit gym has not commented on the heist. They were closed Monday evening, and did not answer CBS 2's calls.
Police recovered the two stolen Mercedes Benzes in the same neighborhood in the Bronx. They were still searching for the Porsche Monday night.
Meanwhile, police continued to search Monday night for at least four suspects.
