Jets Sign Offensive Tackle Jason Smith, Release Wedige

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — The New York Jets have signed veteran offensive tackle Jason Smith, who spent last season with the team.

Smith, the No. 2 overall draft pick by St. Louis in 2009, was waived by New Orleans on Wednesday after he fell behind 2010 second-round pick Charles Brown and rookie third-rounder Terron Armstead at left tackle.

Smith, who played his first three seasons with the Rams, was acquired by the Jets last August for offensive tackle Wayne Hunter. Smith did a fine job as a backup on the offensive line and jumbo tight end, but New York had to cut him in the offseason because he was due an $11.25 million roster bonus. The New Orleans  Saints signed him in April.

The Jets released center Scott Wedige to make room for Smith.
