Sale-Seeking Shoppers Skip The Beach And Hit The Mall For Labor Day Deals

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- While many New Yorkers decided to hit the beach or stop by a barbecue over Labor Day Weekend others were planning to cash in on big savings at popular shopping spots.

Holiday sales were already underway on Friday and shoppers couldn't wait to share their advice with CBS 2's Cindy Hsu.

"This shirt from Forever 21 was $10. Usually it would be like $30 or $40," Destiny Alvarado said.

Shirts weren't the only item flying off of the rack.

"Jeans for $14.99. H&M is always crazy. I love H&M. I could live in there," Zacquis Bullock said.

Consumer experts said that Labor Day Weekend sales are the best of the summer, bypassing the Fourth of July and Memorial Day.

"Some of the best things to buy during Labor Day weekend is summer apparel, grills, outdoor furniture, and even mattresses," explained Mark LoCastro of dealnews.com.

Mattresses can be found for as much as 50-percent off and similar deals can be found on summer clothes, experts said.

There are some items that savvy shoppers will be avoiding this weekend.

"The worst thing to buy right now for Labor Day or even in the month of September is fall apparel. It's in-season, which means you're paying in-season prices," LoCastro said.

Some shoppers have even taken to the Web to find the best prices by signing up for e-mail alerts from their favorite stores.

"Everybody's doing 40-, 50-percent off a lot of other incentives. If you shop here you get $10 worth of coupons," Sue Deck said.

Online shoppers can search for coupon codes and apply multiple discounts to the same purchase, which usually isn't the case in stores, Hsu reported.

Items like HDTVs, laptops, and household goods are also heavily discounted for Labor Day.

The savings won't stop after the weekend either. Sales on appliances like blenders and refrigerators can be found on Black Friday and October is prime time to shop for a car, according to experts.
