Missing Woman, 2 Granddaughters Found Safe In Newark

ELIZABETH, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- An Elizabeth, N.J. grandmother who suffers from dementia and her two young granddaughters were found in Newark Tuesday,

Police told CBS 2's Christine Sloan that Barbara Artis, 77, who has early stages of Alzheimer's disease, was found along with her two young granddaughters – Destiny, 2, and Lana, 11 months – in Newark shortly after 11 a.m.

Detectives from the Elizabeth Police Department and the Union County Prosecutor's office were investigating in Newark, when they saw Artis at Irving Turner Boulevard and Spruce Street, a police official said.

Artis and the two children were taken to an area hospital in an ambulance for a check-up after they were found.

Artis had last been was last seen leaving her home on Lexington Place in Elizabeth at 5:15 p.m. Monday, police said. She was walking away from her home with her granddaughters.

The little girls' mother, Kim Artis, was desperate and scared before everyone was found, CBS 2's Christine Sloan reported.

"I just want them back home in one piece," she sobbed.

Kim Artis said she had just stepped out for a minute when the Barbara Artis walked out the front door.
