Report: 50 Percent Of Asian American Students In NYC Schools Say They've Been Bullied

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Some Asian American students are hoping the new school year brings an end to bullying in the New York City school system.

A new report by the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund and the Sikh Coalition found that 50 percent of Asian American students interviewed said they've been bullied.

The Sikh Coalition's Amardeep Singh said 25 percent of those surveyed said they also suffered from physical violence, especially for Muslims and Sikhs.

"I think that post 9/11 dynamic exacerbates school bullying for that segment of the Asian American community," Singh said.

Pawarpreet Singh still gets emotional when he talks about being bullied by his elementary school classmates.

"I had to deal with people calling me 'Osama' and 'terrorist' and I also had to deal with people touching my turban," he said.

The city implemented anti-bullying regulations five years ago. Singh said progress has been made, but more needs to be done.

"They really need to require training on the anti-bullying provisions for all faculty and staff, especially the school safety agents," he said. "Right now, one teacher per school is required to receive training on the regulation."
