Greenwich Cops: 73-Year-Old Woman Arrested For Going On Car 'Keying' Spree

GREENWICH, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- Vandalizing cars is nothing new, but when the suspect is a woman in her 70s, it's certainly unusual. Police say she's vandalized at least a half a dozen cars.

CBS 2's John Slattery attempted to talk to the woman on Tuesday.

"It makes no sense to me," Greenwich Police Lt. Kraig Gray said.

Police said the incidents happened on Sunday on the street where the 73-year-old lives, Pemberwick Road, a working class street in Greenwich. The term is "keying," but police suspect something else was used.

"Possibly some sort of metal screw or chunk of metal," Lt. Gray said.

One of the victims was a next-door neighbor, who didn't want to talk to CBS 2. Another neighbor allegedly saw the woman in the act.

"A good citizen of the neighborhood was out and observed her acting suspiciously around, approached and realized she had just been engaged in vandalizing a car," Lt. Gray said.

Police arrested Janina Slomiana on six counts of criminal mischief, a felony. When asked if she committed the alleged crimes, Slomiana told Slattery "no," before ducking into a house.

Police said they're now looking at 20 other cases from over the summer. One repaired truck suffered $6,500 worth of damage. Another man told Slattery he, too, was a victim.

"I found it scratched on the passenger side in mid-July. From one quarter-panel to quarter panel, all the way down," Ralph DelVecchio said,

What everyone was wondering was why?

"I don't know the answer to that. She's the only one that does," Lt. Gray said.

Neighbors said the entire ordeal was one big surprise, adding if she's guilty, there must have been a simmering anger they couldn't see.

Police said the woman, who has lived in the neighborhood for decades, lives alone and takes walks every day, giving her the opportunity to do the deed.
