Woman Dies After Hit-And-Run On Queens Boulevard

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A woman has died at a hospital after she was struck by a vehicle while crossing a street in Queens, police said.

The driver left the scene after hitting the woman at around 10:20 p.m. Saturday at Queens Boulevard and 71st Avenue, authorities said.

The woman died later at North Shore University Hospital.

Police identified the victim as Nisath Hossain, 58, of Elmhurst, Queens.

As 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten reported Sunday, neighbors said the city has been trying to cut down on all the accidents on Queens Boulevard by trying to retiming the lights and slowing down the traffic. But they said it is still difficult crossing the street.

"I don't chance it," one neighbor said. "I stand there like a little kid, you know? And I wait until it's green."

"They've slowed down the lights a bit, you know, that's helped a bit," another man added. "But still, this is basically a highway."

Police believe the driver responsible for the hit-and-run was driving a minivan. There was no immediate arrest.
