Frustrated Wide Receiver Hakeem Nicks: 'I Can't Throw It To Myself'

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- You can see the frustration on the players' faces and the coaches' faces.

And now you're starting to hear it.

The Giants failed to get in the end zone on Sunday afternoon, falling flat to the previously winless Panthers, 38-0, in Charlotte.

The offensive line didn't give quarterback Eli Manning much time to throw -- he was sacked seven times on the day -- and when he did manage to get throws off, he struggled with his accuracy.

The numbers tell the story. The three-time Pro Bowler was just 12 of 23 for 119 yards and an interception.

Hakeem Nicks, considered by many to be New York's best receiver -- some would argue for Victor Cruz -- was completely held in check by the Carolina defense.

Playing in his hometown, the 25-year-old was thrown to just one time and didn't catch a pass.

Flustered after the defeat, the former first-round pick couldn't hold back his emotions.

"It's part of the game," Nicks told The Star-Ledger. "You've got to control what you can control.  I can't throw it to myself."

When Giants head coach Tom Coughlin was told about his receiver's quote on Monday, he was understandably displeased with Nicks' choice of words.

"I'll talk to him," Coughlin said. "That's not a smart thing to say."

Nicks, currently in his contract year, was solid in the first two weeks of the season. In the season opener against Dallas, the 6-foot-1, 208-pounder caught five passes for 114 yards. In Week 2 against the Broncos, he hauled in four passes for 83 yards.

Nicks is yet to score a touchdown this season.
