Candidates Cite Commitment To Working Families

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio and public advocate candidate Letitia James announced a mutual endorsement Saturday.

De Blasio won the Democratic primary last month and is up against Republican Joe Lhota in the mayoral election in November. City Councilwoman James (D-35th) defeated state Sen. Daniel Squadron (D-Manhattan/Brooklyn) in a runoff last week, and faces a general election next month without a Republican opponent.

In a joint statement Saturday, de Blasio and James noted what they called their “shared commitment to fighting for New York City’s working families.”

“Council Member Letitia James has a proven track record of fighting for the people of New York City,” de Blasio said in a news release. “From voting to end the overuse and abuse of Stop and Frisk to working to increase affordable housing, Tish knows the issues that matter most to working New Yorkers. I have no doubt she will be a dedicated advocate for the people of this city.”

In the same release, James said: “New Yorkers are ready for our city to go in a new direction. To do so, we must elect Bill de Blasio mayor. Bill and I share an unyielding belief that government, at its core, is a vehicle to uplift those who’ve been left behind. I know Bill de Blasio will continue fighting for quality schools in every neighborhood, including pre-k for every child; increasing access to affordable housing; and an end to Stop and Frisk abuses. I urge all New Yorkers to join me in supporting our next mayor, Bill de Blasio.”

James and de Blasio greeted voters together Saturday in Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn.
