Man Sought In Fort Tryon Park Attack Arrested In New Jersey

HACKENSACK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A homeless man, who allegedly attacked a mother as she walked with her baby in an upper Manhattan park, is now in custody in New Jersey.

Oscar Ruiz, 35, was arrested over the weekend in Englewood after police received a tip from a source, CBS 2's Christine Sloan reported.

Ruiz is accused of attacking Mary Jane Jarman, 33, as she pushed her 8-month-old son in a jogging stroller in Fort Tryon Park on Sept. 27.

"A man climbed over the railing with a broken bottle and said come here, come here and I started yelling, screaming, trying to draw as much attention as I could to myself," Jarman told CBS 2 after the attack.

Jarman fought the alleged assailant off with a bike pump she had in the stroller.

"He got me in a bear hug at one point, down on the ground and I just kept hitting and hitting him and he took off," Jarman said.

Jarman and her son were not injured in the attack.
