Electronic Speed Signs Being Installed Near Hempstead Schools

NORTH BELLMORE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - New electronic school speed limit signs are going up near schools in the Town of Hempstead on Long Island.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, one of the new signs is posted near Saw Mill Road Elementary School in North Bellmore.

Minutes after the sign was installed, drivers who were going over the speed limit slowed down, Hall reported.

"People tend to forget that there is a speed limit and they're more concerned with being on time for pickup or drop-off and sometimes safety takes a side step," a mother of three told Hall.

The electronic signs display a driver's speed as they go by. They're posted below the signs alerting drivers that the speed limit in a school zone is 15 mph.

Some drivers were clocked going nearly three times the speed limit before slowing down, Hall reported.

"We can't take the lives of our students as not being precious," North Bellmore Public Schools Superintendent Marie Testa told Hall.

Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray and State Sen. Charles Fuschillo unveiled the sign outside Saw Mill Road Elementary.

Speed safety signs will be installed near seven Hempstead schools over the next few weeks.
