Parents Shocked After L.I. Teacher Arrested On Drug Charge

LINDENHURST, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island school teacher has been charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance following his arrest over the weekend.

Lindenhurst High School teacher and varsity volleyball coach Kevin Muscarello reportedly had a large quantity of anabolic steroids in his vehicle when he was arrested during a routine traffic stop Sunday morning, WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs reported.

"We have no reason to believe that Mr. Muscarello was distributing steroids to students," school superintendent Richard Nathan said in a statement, which brought little comfort to parents.

"He should lose his job," one parent said. "You just don't do that."

"Teachers should not be doing that kind of stuff," another parent said.

In the statement, Nathan said "Muscarello has been employed by the district for 11 years, had no prior criminal record and all appropriate due diligence in conformance with state law was exercised in his hiring."

Muscarello, 40, has been reassigned pending the outcome of an investigation.

"Our district will cooperate fully with the police and their investigation and we will continue to make the safety and well-being of our students and staff our top priority," Nathan said.
