NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) --A driver was hit with serious charges Saturday, after a crash that left a 2-year-old boy dead in Queens.

Around 9:50 p.m. Friday, police were dispatched to the corner of Junction and Northern boulevards in Jackson Heights, Queens, for a call of a child struck by a vehicle.

Police learned that a white sport-utility vehicle had slammed into Jaied Gigueroa, 2, as he crossed from the west side of Junction Boulevard to the east with his 23-year-old mother.

The SUV driver stopped and took the boy and his mother to Booth Memorial Hospital, where the boy was pronounced dead, police said.
