Nun Hospitalized After Jumping From Convent Window To Escape Flames
NEW YORK (AP) -- Authorities say a 45-year-old nun jumped from a second-floor window to escape a suspicious fire at a Staten Island convent.
The woman suffered back injuries but was stable at a hospital Saturday after the early-morning blaze. Police say they are investigating the fire as a possible bias incident. Officials say the two-alarm blaze at the St. Joseph Hill Convent burned started at about 5:30 a.m. and was under control about an hour later.
The fire department said a second resident suffered minor injuries but refused treatment at the scene. Four firefighters were injured.
The convent is on the grounds of St. Joseph Hill Academy, a 14-acre Catholic school for kindergarten through the 12th grade.
