Police: Burglary Suspect Falls 5 Stories In Escape Attempt In East Village

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An alleged prowler was left in critical condition Sunday evening, after police said he tried to escape from an East Village apartment he had just burglarized by jumping from a fifth-story window.

The suspect in the apartment in the building at 201 E. 2nd St. early Sunday morning, when the tenant come home and saw him in the middle of stealing electronics and gaming equipment, police said.

Caught in the act, he struggled with the resident, but then broke free and tried to make a quick getaway through the window – only to fall five stories.

The suspect ended up with two broken legs, a fractured skull and a spinal injury, police said. He was expected to survive.

Police said the suspect – identified as Derrick Williams, 20 – has a long rap sheet of 17 arrests – several of them for burglaries.
