Lauren Spierer Signs Come Down In Bloomington, Ind.

INDIANAPOLIS (CBSNewYork/AP) -- City crews in Bloomington have taken down 20 large signs seeking information about the disappearance more than two years ago of an Indiana University student from Westchester County.

The Bloomington Herald-Times reported Monday that the signs of Lauren Spierer scattered across the city came down last week in a decision by Mayor Mark Kruzan.

Kruzan said the city initially planned to remove the signs after Indiana University's graduation last May, but when local firefighters renovated the volunteers' signs in April, the city decided to wait another six months before taking them down. Kruzan said residents feel the signs should have come down long ago. However, a Facebook page recently went up encouraging people to flood the mayor with emails to save the signs.

Spierer, 20 years old at the time, vanished June 3, 2011, after a night of partying with friends. She left without her shoes or cell phone and was later seen on surveillance video stumbling out of an elevator at her apartment building. Months of searches following her disappearance turned up nothing, and no arrests have been made.

Spierer's parents have said publicly that they believe their daughter is likely dead and have routinely appealed for anyone who knows what happened to her to come forward.

"We remain determined in our efforts to find answers and bring Lauren home," Rob and Charlene Spierer said in a Facebook post Sunday.
