New York Food Stamp Families Adjust As Benefit Cuts Kick In

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Some New York families could feel the pinch in November when food stamp benefits are reduced.

Most families who get food stamps through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly referred to as SNAP, will be losing about $36 a month, 1010 WINS' Sonia Rincon reported.

"We're gonna have to cut back on a lot of things that the children need. Milk, stuff like that," one Harlem resident said.

Benefit reductions will be based on a variety of factors including income and household size.

For many New York families the reduction in benefits will mean finding other ways to put food on the table.

"What are we gonna eat? Only chicken and bread and crackers," one woman said, "Go to the church, go to the pantry to see if they've got food too."

Participation in SNAP has doubled in the past 10 years. The reduction in benefits will affect families on the program as well as grocery stores where shoppers use food stamps.

The cuts are a result of an expiring financial boost from the Federal American Recovery and Reinvestment act.
