City Sees A Day Of No Murders Or Non-Fatal Violence
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- For many New Yorkers, it was surprising over 24 hours -- or more precisely, what did not happen.
As 1010 WINS' Roger Stern reported, there were no reports of fatal or non-fatal shootings, stabbings or murders of any kind on Thursday, for the second time in a period of a year. The last time such an occurrence happened was on Nov. 26, 2012.
City Sees A Day Of No Murders Or Non-Fatal Violence
The city usually averages three to four homicides a day, and some took the news of murder-free day with a grain of salt.
"It just happened to happen, you know? I mean, statistics like that are always great; they're always comforting. But in the end, there's no guarantee that it's going to be that way tomorrow," one man said.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg has argued that the city has gotten safer because of the police policies he has put in place.
By one estimate, New York City may finish the year with the lowest murder rate since the 1950s. As of last Sunday, the city had seen 283 murders, down 22 percent from 364 in the same period last year, the New York Post reported.
