Agent: Jay Z 'Intimately Involved' In Cano Negotiations

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Brodie Van Wagenen will be the man behind Robinson Cano's new deal.

But rap mogul Shawn "Jay Z" Carter is also "intimately involved in all areas" of the process, Van Wagenen said Sunday on SiriusXM's MLB Network Radio.

"That has been true for the last six months," he said. "It's certainly true now. Jay is a very, very successful businessman, who has a keen understanding of value, a keen understanding of brands, and a keen understand of what this player, Robinson Cano, wants to accomplish in his career."

SWEENY: HOW MUCH FOR CANO? SURVEY SAYS...

Cano left super-agent Scott Boras earlier this year to sign on as the inaugural client at Jay Z's Roc Nation Sports. The venture was formed in partnership with Creative Artists Agency, which employs Van Wagenen.

"He's been at the table both in strategy sessions and in preparation," Van Wagenen said of Jay Z. "And he absolutely has, and will continue to be, involved in the actual negotiations with potential suitors."

Cano, the cream of the free-agent crop, batted .314 with 27 home runs and 107 RBIs for the New York Yankees in 2013. He has reportedly asked for more than $300 million over 10 years, though many believe he'll have to settle for much less.

The Yankees are expected to resume negotiations with Cano in the coming weeks.

"What I think people are starting to recognize as well is that players of this magnitude don't come along very often," Van Wagenen said. "And the opportunity to acquire them is limited. And when you want to try to acquire impact, middle-of-the-order, dynamic players, rare talent, you can only do it in a few areas."
