Cops Seek Suspects In Assault, Robbery Of 85-Year-Old Woman

STAMFORD, Conn (CBSNewYork) -- Police were looking for a couple who allegedly attacked an 85-year-old woman in the parking garage at the Stamford Town Center.

Around 9:30 on Friday morning, in broad daylight, an elderly woman was punched in the face and robbed as she made her way to her car, CBS 2's Alice Gainer reported.

"They came up from behind her and punched her in the face, knocking her to the ground," Stamford Police Sgt. Christian DiCarlo said. "She did sustain small cuts to her lip."

DiCarlo added that the woman also broke her nose during the attack.

The robbery was the work of a man and a woman described as black and in their mid 20's, police said. The male was wearing a red hoodie. the couple took the woman's purse which contained a cell phone and cash and took off.

"Pretty vicious assault. I mean, we generally don't see something like that especially that early in the morning in that area," Sgt. DiCarlo said.

Shoppers said they could not believe what happened.

"Wow! That's pretty messed up," one shopper said.

There were no security cameras inside of the parking garage, which means that police will have to focus on surveillance video from inside of the mall.

For shoppers. the attack was a wake-up call to focus on their surroundings.

"I usually do not worry when I'm here during the day. The day is not worrisome to me. Maybe now it should be," Lenore Rich said.

Police urged anybody who may have seen anything to give them a call. The woman was taken to a local hospital and is doing fine.
