NYC Cab Drivers Strike A Pose For New Calendar

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Sexy swimsuit models, studly firefighters ... and beefcake cabbies?

As WLNY 10/55's Hazel Sanchez reported, some drivers have emerged from behind the wheels of their yellow cabs to become the faces of the first-ever NYC taxi drivers calendar.

"We wanted to do something fun and light-hearted, and there was no pressure to be a model or to perform or anything like that," said Phil Kirkman, who created the calendar with his fiancee, Shannon McLoughlin.

"Yellow cabs are such an iconic part of New York scenery, and we wanted to tell these guys' stories," McLoughlin added. "One of our drivers, Jose, used to be a telenovela star in Venezuela. Some of our drivers went to NYU. They all have really dynamic pasts and presents."

The calendar was created to promote immigrant awareness. Kirkman and McLoughlin said 90 percent of NYC cab drivers are immigrants. Proceeds will be donated to a charity supporting low-income and immigrant families.

For Imran, posing in the calendar was a lifelong dream come true.

"Long ago, it was my desire to do modeling," he said. "And  used to think about this in the cab. And then I had a chance, and I don't want to lose this chance."

The drivers say the calendar also gives people a chance to see the softer side of their stereotypical image.

"It lets you know that drivers are human, first of all," said cabbie Amon Hans Kokora.
