Police: L.I. Woman Cited After Pit Bulls Found Emaciated, Chained To Tree

DEER PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island woman has been cited after police said she severely neglected two pit bulls and left them chained to a tree in her yard.

On Dec. 8, Officer James Johnson responded to a 911 call about two neglected pit bulls at a home on Lincoln Avenue in Deer Park, Suffolk County police said.

When Johnson and a member of the Suffolk County SPCA arrived, they found two very emaciated dogs chained to a tree in the back yard, police said.

The dogs, named Nina and Papa, were taken to the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island in West Islip where veterinarians determined the two had been neglected, police said.

The dogs' owner, 55-year-old Sharon Martinez, was given a field appearance ticket Wednesday morning for severe animal neglect, police said. She will appear in court on a later date.

The dogs are now at the Town of Babylon Animal Shelter.
