PATERSON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Paterson police officer shot and killed a home invasion suspect early Saturday, marking the third such incident in recent days.

The shooting happened around 3 a.m. near Rosa Parks Boulevard and Franklin Street in Paterson.

The city officer encountered a motorist who fit the description of a man wanted in connection with the home invasion. A struggle ensued, and the officer fired one round which hit the suspect.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he died a short time later. The officer also was taken to the hospital for an evaluation, but further details on his condition have not been disclosed.

The incident marked the third police-involved shooting over the past week.
