Jewish Groups Gather To Memorialize Ariel Sharon

JERUSALEM (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Israelis from all walks of life are paying their final respects to Ariel Sharon.

They've been filing past the casket of the former general and prime minister today in a plaza in front of the Israeli parliament building.

Jewish Groups Gather To Memorialize Airel Sharon

One man who served under Sharon's command during the 1973 Mideast war says ``those who didn't know him from up close can't truly understand what a legend he was.''

Dignitaries from around the world are expected to attend Sharon's funeral tomorrow. Vice President Joe Biden is heading a U.S. delegation.

In New York multiple Jewish groups joined together to memorialize Sharon.

"This man passed away from this world, this true Jewish hero, this soldier who expressed bravery for the state of Israel," Rabbi Mordecai Takarski told 1010 WINS reporter Glenn Schuck.

Sharon died yesterday, eight years after suffering a stroke that left him in a coma. He was 85.
