2 Killed, 3 Injured In Newark Shooting

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Two people were killed and three others were wounded when someone fired several shots at a car outside a Newark restaurant.

But it's not clear what sparked the shooting, which occurred around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday on Springfield Avenue in the city's West Ward. Authorities say it appears that at least one of the victims was targeted by the shooter, but they declined further comment.

City Police Director Samuel DeMaio told The Newark Star-Ledger that the car's driver, Akbar Muhammad, who is the son of a Newark imam, and a female passenger were killed in the shooting. The three other victims were all hospitalized in stable condition, but further details on their injuries were not disclosed.

"It's a terrible thing, especially if you have only one person in that vehicle who is the target, and you have such a disregard for life that four other people are injured," DeMaio told the newspaper.

Murders in Newark reached 111 in 2013, the first time the number has surpassed 100 in six years.
