Police Investigating Stabbing Death Of Elderly Valley Cottage Woman

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are investigating what they are calling the suspicious death of an elderly woman in Rockland County.

As CBS 2's Hazel Sanchez reported Saturday, 81-year-old Peggy Nadell was found fatally stabbed in her Valley Cottage home Saturday morning.

Longtime neighbor and dear friend Dr. Cyril Ross said he's in disbelief after learning the news. "I just can't quite picture it. I mean it just makes you shutter."

Ross said he feels horrible for Nadell's family, especially her daughter, who apparently found her mother's body in the Andover Road home, Sanchez reported.

"At this point we're trying to determine and develop what exactly occurred," Clarkstown Police Department Sgt. Glenn Cummings said.

Investigators combed through the house and through cars outside, including the car belonging to Nadell's daughter.

Ross told Sanchez the crime scene seemed like a nightmare with the most unlikely victim. "She was a very independent and active lady, and her chronological age was belied by her appearance."

Chairwoman of the Rockland Democratic Party Kristen Zebrowski told WCBS 880 that Nadell was a member of the Democratic Committee. "We send our thoughts and prayers to Peggy's daughter and the rest of the family. Peggy was a longtime committee woman. I was proud to call her my friend. She cared deeply for her party," Zebrowski said.

Neighbors said they can't think of any reason why someone would want to hurt Nadell.

Police said they don't have any suspects at this time.
