It traces the different struggles for freedom by these women.
"It's a very complicated relationship but it will go on for 35 years and they will shape each other's lives and change one another and change one another's destinies. But it's a disfigured kind of relationship," Kidd told WCBS 880's Pat Farnack.
Kidd said the book will be adapted into a movie.
"What I most wish readers would take away from this book is a felt experience of the story. I want readers to learn something, of course," Kidd told Farnack. "Most of all, I just wish for this empathetic experience of what it might've been like to be a slave during that time."
Kidd is also the author of "The Secret Life of Bees."
