Captain Callahan Focused On Rangers, Not Trade Talk
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It was business as usual Tuesday night for New York Rangers captain Ryan Callahan.
All the trade speculation? Forget about it. That's put aside when he steps on the ice.
"I try not to bring that business to the rink," Callahan said after scoring two goals and adding an assist in a 5-1 win over Colorado. "I try to concentrate on the Rangers and what we're doing here. That's my main focus."
Madison Square Garden was taken over by chants of "Ca-lly!" on Tuesday as the 28-year-old continues to face off with the Rangers regarding his future. He reportedly wants a seven-year deal at more than $6 million annually. The team has offered him a five-year, $30 million deal, according to multiple reports.
"That is where I want to be, on the ice playing for the Rangers," Callahan said.
The Rangers have a decision to make with Callahan headed toward free agency. Keep him, continue negotiations and roll the dice? Or trade him before one of two trading deadlines?
Until then, Callahan is going to keep doing his thing. The Rangers have won four straight games and 10 of their last 13.
"It's nights like tonight that I enjoy," he said.
The NHL's roster freeze for the Sochi Olympics begins Friday afternoon and runs through Feb. 23. The league's trading deadline is March 5.
"You try and turn it into a motivating factor," Callahan said. "I'm a positive guy."
