Many Shoppers Looking For Winter Boots Left Out In The Cold

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- In a city where you can buy virtually anything, winter boots are in short supply.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, Matherine Joseph was among those searching for a pair at Harry's Shoes on the Upper West Side.

"My size are out," she said. "You can't find the sevens."

The store's owner, Robert Goldberg, said manufacturers produced boots based on the past few mild winters. Now, the demand has exceeded the supply.

"We do have some inventory," he said. "But it's starting to get a little thinner. And if we get one more snow, we may be down to bare shelves.

"People are looking for them, and we just don't have much," Ian Hickey, a floor supervisor at Eastern Mountain Sports, told 1010 WINS' Sonia Rincon. "Yeah, it's really hard. Jackets, too."

Even in a fashion-conscious city, some shoppers are taking whatever color and style they can get their hands on.

"It's not like it's just the Northeast that's getting the weather, so it's less supply available, but a much larger marketplace looking for product," Goldberg said.

That's not good news for Diane Levine and her husband, who were looking for boots before Thursday's storm.

"Tell them to get on it," she said. "The market is here. We're ready to buy."

And if you think you might find a better selection online, you might be out of luck. One woman told Rincon on Monday she thought she had scored some good boots on the Web. "But this morning, we get the email," she said. "They said it's sold out."

EMS is sold out of most boots as well as Northface.
