Paterson Boy, 13, Killed In Dog Attack Identified

PATERSON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Authorities have identified the 13-year-old boy who was killed when a 115-pound bull mastiff dog attacked him and another youth in Paterson.

City resident Kenneth Santilla and another 13-year-old boy were walking along a street when the attack occurred Friday afternoon, police said. The boys then ran off in different directions.

Santilla was found dead late Friday night, shortly after he was reported missing. But a cause of death has not been determined.

The other boy, whose name has not been released, and the dog's owner, 50-year-old Paterson resident Paul Clarke, both suffered bite wounds.

Authorities have said Clarke stabbed the animal "quite a few times" during the attack. The dog was euthanized, and its remains will be tested for rabies.

No charges have been filed.

The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office said the bull mastiff escaped from its property and came into contact with the two 13-year-old boys a short time afterward.

Neighbors told CBS 2 that this isn't the first time the dog has attacked someone. A woman across the street said the same dog once bit her son.

"This is the second time that dog attacked somebody," neighbor Randy Billie said. "I have major concerns about the fact that that dog is able to jump over that fence."

"We've seen him sit in the car or bark at us and stuff like that," 17-year-old Rezwana Islam told WCBS 880's Jim Smith. " ... That could have been us. You never know."
