NYPD Launches Crackdown On Double Parking

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The NYPD has begun a crackdown on double parking citywide and will be distributing fliers to remind drivers.

The crackdown has been dubbed "Operation Move Along." The flier outlines a list of reasons why double parking is not just illegal, but rude.

"When you double park, you obstruct the views of other drivers, pedestrians and cyclists; you impede traffic flow; you increase the chance of a collision," the flier said. "Don't be the cause of a collision or injury or death to somebody's loved one. Please be considerate."

The flier is being handed out to drivers this week, police said.

"Double parking is like the worst man. All it does is cause traffic, road rage, people getting out of their cars, I've seen it," said Bensonhurst resident Randy Vargas.

The double parking initiative could hit delivery truck drivers the hardest.

Many said they often have to double park to do their job and their situation is compounded in some areas where avenues have lost lanes due to bike lanes, CBS 2's Scott Rapoport reported.

Delivery truck driver Rene Vivar said he sometimes he double parks as much as five times a day.

"It's hard to find a parking spot," said Vivar, who thinks the initiative won't stop others from double parking. "I don't think it's going to stop us. We still have to park to do our work."

The ticket for double parking in New York City is $115.
