Suffolk Police: Suspect Burglarized 10 Homes To Fund Crack Habit

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Suffolk County Police have arrested a serial burglar who they say stole cash and jewelry from 10 homes to feed a crack cocaine habit.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, Vincent Heilig, 30, of Ronkonkoma, was arrested Wednesday for six home burglaries. Police later determined Heilig was responsible for four other home burglaries in Ronkonkoma and Medford.

"I don't know how he chooses the homes that he'd choose but he would typically go through the back door of any house that he thought no one was home at the time," Suffolk County Police Sgt. Dean Joseph told Hall. "He did one way back in April of last year and then he did the most of them between the end of December and the beginning of January."

Heilig stole over $10,000 worth of jewelry, police said.

He is charged with 10 counts of burglary and one count of attempted burglary and was due to be arraigned later Friday at First District Court in Central Islip on March 7.

The investigation is continuing.
